I am proud of the book we put together during our doctoral residency last year, titled "From program to practice: Program, empowerment, and persistence in doctoral education." I wrote a piece on the persistence required of first-generation college students in pursuit of their terminal degrees. I have long advocated for San Diego State University and the other CSU campuses to be able to independently offer doctoral degrees. As I explain in The San Diego Union-Tribune with SDSU’s Vice President for Research & Innovation, Hala Madanat, the recent passage of AB 656 is one of the most significant changes to public higher education in California in more than 60 years. This will allow us to both further expand access and opportunity for students and address significant needs in the region’s workforce, and is not duplicative of anything in the University of California system. It also expands our university’s research capacity and enterprise in ways that will benefit SDSU students and faculty today and for decades to come. https://bit.ly/3uqqYcd

Forget the football - there's another field where the city of Manchester is even more of a world-leader: science, technology and innovation.Times Higher Education has selected the The University of Manchester as host of the 2024 World Academic Summit, bringing together hundreds of university presidents, chief executives and policymakers from across the world in Manchester in October 2024.And this week the UK's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology announced that Salford, in Greater Manchester, will be its new, second headquarters.As universities and science minister Michelle Donelan MP said: "Greater Manchester, synonymous with the Industrial Revolution, is now at the forefront of our plans to cement the UK's position as a science & tech superpower. From Alan Turing to the discovery of graphene, it's a place steeped in a legacy of technological progress."Manchester University's president, Dame Nancy Rothwell, picked up Times Higher Education's lifetime achievement award at the #THEAwards last week. Welcome back faculty and staff! It was great to see a lot of my colleagues during convocation. In addition, it was exciting to hear from President Ochoa on his vision.A few takeaways as we, at , approach this new year. 1. We will spotlight Student Success by focusing on: - A data informed approach to challenges and opportunities at the University. - Graduation rates/retention - Creating pathways to obtain degrees. - Reducing inequities among student success - Loving the work that we do 2. We will focus on faculty and staff success and retention. 3. We will look to build a sense of community for all people where they feel valued.4. We will build assets and structures including facilities, degree offerings that positively impact the student experience.These are some of the highlights.
