City Departments

The City of Dearborn's departments manage and provide essential services and resources to residents, businesses, and visitors. These departments work collaboratively with the mayor and city council to address various community needs and ensure efficient delivery of services. Their collective work ensures that Dearborn remains a thriving, well-serviced, inclusive, and responsive city.

Administration

City Administration includes the Mayor's Office, the office of the Chief of Staff, and the office of the Chief Operating Officer.

Assessing

The Department of Assessment's main function is to place a fair and equitable assessment on every property in the City of Dearborn and then calculate the capped and taxable value. The department appraises and assesses Dearborn properties and performs related assessment administration functions as required by the State of Michigan.

Communications

The Department of Communications uses a variety of mediums to provide information about and promote Dearborn as a vibrant place to live, work, and play. This includes press and media relations; social media content and engagement; website maintenance; production and distribution of the annual City Calendar and community Google calendar; production of video content, recordings of public meetings, community bulletin board services through City of Dearborn Television (CDTV); support for city events; and oversight and management of overall City branding efforts.

Community Relations

The Community Relations Department fosters positive relationships between City government and residents through communication, outreach, and engagement initiatives, enhancing civic participation and addressing community concerns. Specifically, it oversees the Response Center, where residents call with questions; the Neighborhoods Liaisons program; and the Special Events division.

Economic Development

The Department of Economic Development is made up of five divisions: Building Support Services; Neighborhood Services; Community Development Services; Planning and Zoning Services; and Workforce & Business Development Services. The mission of the Department is to cultivate a thriving economy and prosperous neighborhoods by providing exceptional customer service, innovative resources, and driving responsible business development. The department handles building plan reviews, permits, and inspections; planning and zoning applications; community development services; business support services; code enforcement, and more.

Finance

The Department of Finance includes three divisions: Treasury, Purchasing, and Accounting. The department is responsible for developing the City budget, as well as facilitating the budget process with the Mayor and City Council. It also serves as the central billing and collection service for city taxes and other assessments; processes payroll and administers employee benefits for all the City employees and retirees; and oversees all purchasing for the City.

Fire Department

The Dearborn Fire Department provides fire suppression services, paramedic level emergency medical care, fire prevention, public education, fire investigation, emergency management, and hazardous material/rescue operations. These services are provided by 128 full-time firefighters at four fire stations throughout Dearborn and one station in Melvindale.

Human Resources

The Department of Human Resources supports the City of Dearborn by recruiting and hiring employees, completing job analysis and design, upholding workplace policies, maintaining employee records, and more.

Innovation & Technology

The Department of Innovation & Technology oversees the maintenance and advancement of all internal and external communication equipment for the City of Dearborn. The department is responsible for guiding modernization efforts for the City, including management and updates to phone systems, computer equipment and software, web and internet services, and other technologies.

Law

The Law Department is vested with authority in all matters of law relating to the city government and every City department, office, institution, commission, committee, and board. As chief legal counsel for the City of Dearborn, the Corporation Counsel is responsible for providing legal counsel to the Mayor and the City Council.

Library & Historical Museum

The mission of the Dearborn Public Library is to provide effective, courteous, quality services and a balanced collection of materials for the educational, informational, and recreational needs of the community. The department provides these services at three city-run public libraries: The Henry Ford Centennial Library, the Bryant Branch Library, and the Esper Branch Library.

The Dearborn Historical Museum sits within the library system and consists of two properties, providing educational opportunities to school groups and the general public regarding Dearborn's rich history.

Parks & Recreation

The Department of Parks & Recreation manages more than 40 public parks in locations across the city as well as other recreational facilities, including all public pools and splash pads, the Dearborn Ford Community & Performing Arts Center, two municipal golf courses, the Dearborn Ice Skating Center (DISC), and Camp Dearborn in Milford. The department also facilitates all Senior Center programming and travel, recreational activities and classes, and hosts a variety of family-oriented community events throughout the season.

Philanthropy & Grants

The Department of Philanthropy & Grants identifies and secures outside funding for transformative projects to empower a thriving community, improve city infrastructure, and enable innovation to secure Dearborn’s future.

Police

Approximately 200 officers serve within the Dearborn Police Department, whose primary roles are to protect life and property, reduce the opportunity for crime and disorder, enforce the law, and provide other police-related services as required by the community.

Public Health

The Dearborn Public Health Department provides the following essential services to its community: assess, diagnose, and investigate the health needs of Dearborn residents to ensure customized programs, plans, policies, and procedures suitable to our unique needs; develop and build a Public Health Department that can monitor health status to identify and solve community health problems; inform, educate, and empower Dearborn residents about health issues; mobilize community partnerships to identify and solve pressing health issues; develop policies and plans that support individuals, their families, and community health efforts.

Public Works

The Dearborn Department of Public Works is responsible for a wide variety of City services, including leaf collection, snow removal, sidewalk and street repairs, water and sewerage services, and more. It also holds the Housing Division which oversees City-owned housing facilities, and the Engineering Division.
